The week between Christmas and New Year's was a busy one for Devin and Sam. They went to the Aquarium (with Grandma and Grandpa C), the Museum of Nature and Science (with Miko), the Zoo (with G & G C) and Little Monkey Bizness (with Charlie). We also had a great time on New Year's Eve, taking Sam to see Alvin and the Chipmunks with his friends Charlie and Sophia from school. On New Year's Day, we had a little party at our house and the kids had a great time running around and acting crazy!

Sam with Sophia and Charlie

Last weekend, my Dad and Cynthia came for their annual post-Christmas Christmas celebration. We had a great time with them and they were our first overnight visitors in the finished basement. Sam loved showing off all of his Angry Birds to them...he's a little obsessed. And spoiled. We also got a chance to go to a college hockey game and that was a blast.

This weekend, we met up with friends for a lunch at Red Robin and then some window shopping and hanging out. Sam had a great time with Kayley, Blake, Ben and Hayden!

Sam has been cracking us up lately with the things he has been saying. Here are a few examples.
-"That's not funny at all"
-"No shaking booty in my kingdom" - after he pointed out to me that people were shaking their booties on TV and I asked him if he wanted to do that.
-"Really???" - to my Kindle Fire when he gets frustrated with Angry Birds.
-"Thanks for sharing, Daddy."
- After I told him I didn't know if I wanted him to play more Angry Birds that day, he said "please beautiful Mommy?" with the most pathetic, but heart-melting look on his face.
The kid is too much.

Merry Christmas!!

We had a fabulous Christmas! Sam was so much fun this year and he just loved everything he got. Now...where to put everything...

This is what the tree looked like before he hit it Christmas morning.

Lucy knew the gift was for her and Sam just couldn't get it open fast enough for her.

Roasting hot dogs with Grammie on his "campfire" set from Uncle Scott and Aunt Kelly. A total hit.

Sam thinks he got a Kindle for Christmas. At least that is what he is calling his Leap Pad Explorer. He loves it!

All About Christmas

We've been super busy with Christmas parties, Disney on Ice and Sam's Holiday performance at school over the past couple of weeks. Sam is really excited for Christmas this year and he's at the perfect age for making Christmas just magical. I am so happy to say that we are done with all of our shopping and nearly everything is even wrapped. We are looking forward to enjoying the week before Christmas without too much hustle and bustle.

Sam and I made some ornaments last week. This is one of the finished products. He was so proud of himself. I think we've added about a dozen ornaments to our tree this year. He is loving them, so we've been picking them up here and there.

We took Sam to see the Toy Story 3 Disney on Ice last weekend. We went with our friends Brett and Rachel and their 2 boys, Ben and Hayden. The boys loved the show. After the show, we went to a restaurant and the boys had fun watching the fresh tortillas come off the tortilla maker.

Posing by the tree in his Santa shirt...which he absolutely LOVES!

Last week, Sam's school put on a holiday performance. We were so excited for it and Sam was practicing his songs all week leading up to it. It was adorable and so funny in places. Here are a few pictures of the evening and a video also...warning...it's a little long, but totally worth watching.

On Friday evening, my company did our annual Kids Holiday Party and the kids got to visit with Santa and play at Monkey Business. Sam thoroughly enjoyed himself!

Happy Holidays!!

The holidays are here and Sam is so excited this year. He has been constantly asking about Santa and has really been enjoying anything holiday-related, like clothes, shows, etc. He realy liked helping with the Christmas tree this year and was actually a pretty good little helper.

This first picture is from Thanksgiving and is Sam with his cousins, Paige and Jacob. They were all playing on their various electronic devices and I just happened to get this great shot of them all looking up and actually smiling at the same exact moment.

We had our Guatemala adoption group over for a holiday celebration this weekend and the kids had a great time. It is so much fun to get them together and see how much fun they have. Despite the snow on Saturday, we had a pretty good turnout.

2 Years...

Two years ago today, we were approved by our adoption agency to become a waiting family. Two years ago, we thought we might get a call at any time. Our agency certainly tried to ensure we were prepared for that in case it happened. And here we are, still waiting. In fairness, they also tried to prepare us for the other side of things, the side of things we're on right now - a long wait.

A lot of people ask why there is such a long wait and have we thought about changing agencies. In general, domestic adoption (or any adoption for that matter!) has become more challenging and time-intensive. Domestically, adoption numbers are down somewhat. Add to that our agency has been slow at times during our wait and suddenly 2 years makes a bit more sense. They can only match their waiting families with birth families who come to them. In terms of changing agencies, that really isn't an option for us. For one, we would forfeit all of the fees we've already paid to our current agency and we'd have to start over. And secondly, we really truly trust the process our current agency uses. They work with the birth parents and the adoptive parents and they have the best interests of both in mind. While disruptions are still possible with our agency, they are minimal and we feel secure in their process and efforts to prevent that from happening and that alone is worth a longer wait. Of course, I don't always think or feel this way, but when I'm being rational and logical, I firmly believe this.

As of 11/1/11, we are #15 on the waiting family list, though I happen to know we've moved up. It's just not official yet. Families we have gotten to know through this process and wait are starting to be matched. In fact, one couple we are friends with brought home their baby girl just last weekend and they were just ahead of us on the list. I guess what I'm saying is that it is feeling more real and like it is going to happen sometime here in the near future. Seeing our friends get matched gives us hope and optimism that our turn is coming. In fact, this latest turn of events has me feeling a little bit anxious about how much more we need to do to prepare for when that call comes.

With that in mind, we will probably start working more diligently on the nursery. The previous guest room will become the nursery and now that our basement is newly finished (yay!!), we have the space freed up to start thinking about what we want to do for our newest addition.

Here are some pictures of our finished basement. We added a bedroom, bath, play area, small bar, media room and exercise room, plus some good storage space. We are loving it and we can't wait to get everything fully set up the way we want it. For now, we are just basking in the enjoyment of finally being done with the project!

P.S. I've been a bad Mommy and haven't taken many pictures of Sam worth posting lately. I'll do better the next few weeks!

Happy Halloween!

How is it the end of October already?? We have been doing a lot of fun fall things, like visiting pumpkin patches and carving pumpkins.

Sam has been asking "when is Halloween?" for over a month now, so you can imagine his excitement when he woke up this morning. One of the first things he said was "I'm so excited because it's Halloween". He had a great time trick-or-treating this year. He literally ran from house to house with his friend Bianca and the amount of candy is staggering!

In Memory of my Grandpa

We made an unexpected trip to Cincinnati last week. My Grandpa A. had been sick for a while now and he passed away last week. Although he is in a much better place right now, free of pain and suffering, we all miss him terribly.

I am so grateful to have had his love and guidance for 37 years of my life. As a kid, my brother and I always had our grandparents as babysitters. My Mom's parents and my Dad's parents alternated watching us almost every other weekend, so we spent lots of time with our grandparents growing up.

My Grandpa was such a strong and outstanding person. He was so smart and spent a lot of years working at GE in engineering building jet engines. He was always wanting to explain to you how something worked. I remember picking green beans with him in his garden when I was a little girl and riding on his riding lawn mower with him. At our wedding, just 6 1/2 years ago, he was out there on the dance floor just tearing it up on the congo line.

I'll cherish the fact that he got to know Sam and that Sam got to know him a little bit too. He could make Sam giggle like no other. Through the memories and pictures we have, Sam will always know his Great-Grandpa.

I love you Grandpa and I will always miss you.

Home Depot

Sam LOVES going to Home Depot. Whenever we drive by one, he yells out "Home Depot!" On Saturday, we happened upon a Kids Clinic on fire safety and Sam got to make a fire rescue helicopter. Here are a few cute pictures of him working on the helicopter and wearing his HD apron. He didn't take the apron off until Saturday evening.
